In June of 2016, I was commissioned by Whole Life Ministries, a community and faith powerhouse in Augusta, Georgia, to help create an internship program for young adults aged sixteen to twenty-five. Over the course of nine months, I helped create a cohesive internship that allows young adults the opportunity to develop skills that would make them marketable in multiple settings. Writing the leadership curriculum and drafting formal procedures for a program like this challenged me to diversify my writing style and technique. My role as a developer of the program and liaison to the administration for the eleven selected interns necessitated professional communication across leaders of varying age, gender, ethnicity, and discipline. Throughout the process of creating a program that is intended to teach, I learned so much about organizational structure and behavior, labor laws, writing style, and techniques for presentation and marketing. I participated as an Administrative Assistant to the Program Director, Michele Haynes, in the program’s inaugural year.
I served as the programs director in 2018 and 2019, where I oversaw the workings of the internship program, including hiring interns, budgeting, and fundraising. I had the opportunity to understand the nuances of how nonprofits operate and what kinds of leadership skills need to be developed in order to run a nonprofit program effectively. One of my greatest contributions was writing two curriculums for the intern program’s leadership training classes, including one on Servant Leadership and Public Speaking. I taught many of the classes myself, but I also got a chance to bring in other community leaders to teach different classes for my interns. During my second year as the Program Director, I had an intern of my own, and it was wonderful to pour into her one-on-one a watch her blossom before my eyes.
