Dr. McDaniel’s course on the Civil Rights Movement is arguably my favorite class that I’ve taken at Agnes Scott. We examined the Civil Rights Movement from its roots in the pre-Reconstruction era and traced them to the present day struggles for racial equality and conciliation. While it was important for us to study key figures in the movement, it wasn’t our main focus, so we got a chance to really analyze the ebb and flow of the Movement and its nuances for different subsets of the Black community. This particular assignment was focused on the CRM in film, and our class was given free reign with which to pick a film and conduct a short analysis. Because I hadn’t spent much time prior to this course studying Angela Davis and the Black Power Movement, I chose to watch the Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975 as a way to expand my knowledge in this area.
